In today's society, 8 year olds wear makeup, 10 year olds have phones, 12 year olds have boyfriends, 14 year olds are having sex, 16 year olds are pregnant, and by the time you're 17, you're having a baby. I don't know about you, but I don't see God's perfect plan of marriage anywhere in that. The reason that we don't see His plan there, is because the world has it's own plan, which makes it very difficult for Christians to be pure. A lot of young girls just really don't want to have "the talk" wih their mothers, or anyone a lot older. It's awkard. Sadly, mothers don't even have to have that talk anymore. The schools, television and music do it all for them. They don't even get the chance before their child hits middle school!
So many girls (and boys) make so many mistakes. And with every mistake, there's an excuse. "How can I be sexually pure when sex is the focal point of the world?" This may be the saddest excuse ever, because it is absolutely true. How do we abstain from sin when it's the only thing around us? We have to look at the Bible for this answer. We can look at the book of Daniel. In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are thrown into fire. That's because they stood up to the pressure of idolatry. Daniel stands up for his belief in God, in chapter 1. The king wants him to eat fancy palace food, but Daniel knows it would be wrong of him to eat the meat, (because it was God's command to not do so). So, he didn't. So many examples show us that is it possible to go against peer pressure. Especially if we have friends that share our beliefs, like in Daniel 3. If we fill our lives with good people, it makes the bad seem much less threatening.
Excuse number 2: "I'm too weak to abstain." I don't believe that I have to talk about this, (I know that I talk too much, as is!) because my God's Word speaks volumes. {Deuteronomy 31:8- "It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."} {Joshua 1:9- "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."} We have to be courageous in our struggle for purity. Hebrews 13:6, tells us that God is with us, so there is NOTHING that man can do against us.
Excuse 3: "It's normal." We hear it all the time, even from adults. Parents tell their children this sometimes. Because, it's normal, right? Wrong. People assume that because they see something every day, it is "normal." But that' not right. We see sexual scenes in commercials, hear innuendos in songs, EVERY DAY. So, in a sense it is "normal," meaning it is common. But, when I hear that something is normal, I think it is okay. Nothing to worry about. Think of it this way: You go to the Emergency Room because you've noticed you are experiencing many symptoms of a heart attack. The doctor examines you and tells you that you ARE having a heart attack. That's terrifying. BUT, they happen EVERY DAY so it's normal. Nothing to worry about. Do you see where I'm headed? Just because something happens all of the time, doesn't mean that it's okay or acceptable. Just because someone tells you that it's going to be okay if you do this, doesn't mean it will be okay. Doctors are supposed to help us, tell us when something is wrong. Our Physician (Mark 2:17) helps us by telling us what is wrong. And, excuses or not, sexual immorality is wrong, and deadly to our souls.
Whether our slate is as white as snow, or as dark as dirt, we can be pure. God does forgive his true children when we follow his Word. But, even after we are forgiven, any sin leaves a mark on us. On our conscience. We always remember the things we did. We are forgiven, but we do remember, so it is always best to do what is right to begin with.
Purity is an awkward subject for anyone. It makes us all squirm a little! But, sadly it is a very real threat to us, as girls. It happens every day, and we need to protect ourselves and each other, by spreading the Word about the dangers of premarital sex.
